Apparently over 40% of the people I follow are “Dodgy“. If I am following you, there is a good chance that you are showing antisocial behaviour on Twitter. Did you know that you might be appearing on someone’s Twitter list to be cleaned up?
One of the questions people ask me is:
“How do I stop Twitter being so noisy?”
They have enthusiastically followed people and then get overwhelmed with the number of spam like tweets in their feed. A bit of housekeeping is useful and there are tools that can help you do this. One of the tools that has recently caught my attention is Twit Cleaner.
What I like about Twit Cleaner
- It allows you to check yourself out to see whether any of your Twitter behaviour would put you on a naughty list.
- It says I’m awesome. Okay, I am a pushover with a bit of flattery

- It allows you to unfollow people in an intelligent way. You would be surprised how many people I know quite well pop up in the reports.
- It gives you guidelines for what is considered acceptable behaviour and tips to improve your tweeting.
- It slowly unfollow people you select rather than all in one go.
Twitter doesn’t like mass unfollowing because it is used by spammers who will follow people just to get a follow back and then unfollow them automatically.
Caution: The dodgy behaviour is just Si Dawson’s (@SiDawson) opinion, it doesn’t make it the truth. Use his report as a guide.
Let me know if you would like some more housekeeping tips for Twitter, thank you.

Thank you so much for bringing Twit Cleaner to my attention. I love it.
And it says I am awesome lol.
Hi Angie
Twit Cleaner has obviously got it right!

Hi Nicky
Thanks for writing about Twit Cleaner.
You’re absolutely correct – the report simply categorises different types of behaviour (some of them my opinion, some things users have suggested).
Since everyone uses Twitter slightly differently, really all you can do is try to cover all the bases – provide as much information as possible. It’s up to the end user (you) to decide which categories of behaviour bother them or not. If something (eg people who tweet a LOT) is totally fine by you, then just ignore that report category.
I know a lot of people who use Twitter as an RSS feed – so for them the “all links” and “don’t follow back” categories are meaningless. That’s ok – but also why the final selection will always, always up to you – not just an automated mass unfollow.

Thank you for creating a useful tool.

Thanks for the great resource. I’ve been using justunfollow, and without the categories it’s become impossible to tell who to unfollow.
I disagree with several of the categories, though. In fact, by using some of the “dodgy” tactics, I’ve gotten several guest blog posts, interviews, and radio show invitations in the last couple of weeks. The positive interaction in my networking has increased, which is my main use of Twitter.
Hi Michelle
Thank you. I agree with you about some of the categories not being that bad depending on how you use Twitter. For example as a blogger, I will use the same URL a few times because it drives more traffic to the blog post. Did you see Si Dawson has responded in the comments below.
